I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Working at the General Office there were plenty of opportunities to attend company events and get free food, tickets to events, etc.
People in my department were professional and polite.
    Flexible hours for my position.

    Cons

Many contractors were unable to continue in their positions due to budget constraints. There were always new people in and out.
The office is very quiet and it is difficult to get to know others that work on the same floor as you if they are not in your department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the short term contract policy. It doesn't make sense to lose good workers because they need to take a 6 month break after working 18 months with the company.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company values, work atmopsphere, work ethic:
I found employees across the company very professional, collaborative, and genuinely willing to do the right thing.
Hours of the corporate office are great. Benefits are excellent, and a pension plan, salaries can be very good as they want to retain the best people possible for the HQ office.

    Cons

Conservative and sometimes a very stiff work atmosphere, executives make employees nervous as they have a great degree of influence. That sounds normal but it can feel very old school and a politically distracted environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing all you can to be state of the art in delivery of gas and elecrtric energy.
Keep benchmarking with the best energy companies in the nation and the world.
Show the nation what a california utility can be and should be.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    • Competitive Salary
    • Excellent Health, Retirement Benefits
    • Full Relocation Package
    • Retirement of 20% of the employees over the next 5 years leads to a great short term opportunity for advancement

    Cons

    • Too Much Chaos due to Change and Initiatives
    • HR too slow to deal with Salary Inequities
    • Company initiates changes for the sake of change
    • Work Life Balance is out of Balance in most Departments
    • Executives listen to MBA Interns over Seasoned Employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don’t be so hasty to cancel an Initiative in mid operation. Just saying that it is no longer an initiative does not mean that it stopped; only that the employees assigned no longer get credit. It is agreed that there are too many initiatives, but the best way to handle that would be with an Initiative Review Committee and a patient Work down of the ones that would be deselected.

    Pros

Overall a good company, cares about communities where it operates.

    Cons

Sr. Management churn and lack of promotion from within for Sr. positions

Bumpy history. Bankrupt during energy crisis, Prop 16, Smart Meter, San Bruno.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Most people really like working here and are excited to come to work and take a lot of pride in the company. I have never felt more supported and included as an intern and everyone really wanted me to succeed and meet new people within the company. They are looking to hire and bring in new people, lots of job and promotion prospects.

    Cons

Still somewhat of an "old man" company but that is changing. It is more formal than many other companies in the bay area but it is also in a very different industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to attract the best and brightest small steps like continuing to improve the coffee shop (HUGE improvement this summer but needs more tables and feel less cold), maybe adding an outdoor areas and some updates. The building and office spaces still feel very 1970's and for new employees entering the workforce atmosphere and enjoying the space you work in is important.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Love the people! Feels like one big family! Very flexible with family needs. Great Benefits!

    Cons

Salaries are restrictive, if you are hired at a lower pay then a coworker and end up preforming better there is the potential for years of raises before you make a comparable salary. They do not do a good job of giving raises to equalize coworkers based on skillset and actual performance. Favortism occurs like in any workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As mentioned salaries should better reflect actual performance and not be hung up on starting salary.
