I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - good pay+bonus
    - good benefits
    - interesting work
    - flexible work schedule
    - systems/application has direct impact on fellow employee safety and customer satisfaction.

    Cons

    - like any big organization
    - challenging time for the utility
    - some employees are not engaged (in plant retired) and working with them is difficult
    - still hanging on to "this is the way we have always done it"
    - not a lot of new development, buy mostly package solutions.
    - too much focus on "capital" projects and not enough investment in exploring alternatives to old problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Listen to the new employees with experience in other organizations, its not enough to bring in a "new leader" and expect change throughout the organization
    - Make an effort to encourage and hang onto new employees, make sure they do not get discouraged too early and leave before they make a contribution.
    - Do an honest self assessment of the quality of your middle management, and clean the obvious dead wood.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

They truly support career development and promote from within. They also provide ample funding for education. In addition, they provide excellent benefits.

    Cons

HR was very disorganized. They are very good at identifying that they need to change, however, they are not to identify steps to bring about the change. Also, the older workforce is resistant to change. I also felt that management needed leadership development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify actionable steps to bring about change and see them through. Also, reach out to those in the lower rankings. Leadership has no idea regarding director performance.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

    Work/Life Balance
    Exposure to utility business
Good pension benefits - its the only place i know that offers a 401k match and a pension plan

    Cons

Many people are not motivated to work. The only reason many seem to come to work is to pick up a pension eventually.
Highly regulated by CPUC and other agencies
Due to people being in their positions for years and years, it is not easy to get promoted. Though there are a lot of people retiring now.
    Lack of innovation

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, flexible scheduling with a healthy appreciation for work/life balance, and challenging work across the enterprise. Definitely many challenges to contend with on a daily basis if that's your thing.

    Cons

Size of company can be hard to fully navigate, a great deal of bureaucracy which can be discouraging. Often spend more time fighting internal roadblocks than actual work, however many seem to be trying to push through that.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Best pay in the area, many great and talented co-workers

    Cons

Cannot get on permanent to save my life even though I have been working outages for several years and a few years as a year-round contractor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your TAs. They have experience to keep Diablo safe. You shouldn't trust too many newbies just to save some pennies or an even more expensive problem could occur.

There was good and bad but I really struggled with not being paid as much as everyone else

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work/Life Balance. Granted I worked in Operations and as a Contractor for this company and the flexibility of my schedule was great. And when I moved to Program Management, my work life balance got even better. As long as you get your work done, that is the main focus. If you need to leave early or work from home, you just need to let your manager know. Granted this is dependent on your manager but I was lucky enough to work for people who allowed for this flexibility. As a program manager, I was really able to own my program and make the decisions on how to make it run effectively. Raises and bonuses come every year for the time that I worked here.

    Cons

Although, most people say the pay is great, I did not experience this. I came in severely underpaid and never got to where I should have been even with several raises. Management did not work to ensure I was paid fairly and I knew everyone else was being paid more than me.

Technology is so behind. It hinders getting things accomplished on a daily basis.

Career Paths aren't clear and it is hard to move up here unless you are friends with the right people. It is not how much work you do or how smart you are, it's all about who you know. Granted it is probably like that in corporate america period.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your people more and make sure you have the right people doing the right jobs. Please please invest in technology to make the business run better and more efficiently.
