    Psychotic, top down, militaristic managers

    ProsThey pay well. ON has grown through acquisition of stand alone technology companies and has a broad product portfolio, older technology, but broad.

    ConsTraining regarding ON semi's systems is virtually non existent. The organizational structure is the same as the CEO's alma mater, National Semiconductor. BU's compete for factory capacity. National Semiconductor was bought by Texas Instruments.

    Only consider wokring for ON if you have no other options.

    Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers who have good people skills. Promoting engineers via the 'good 'ol by' system leads to tyrannical, dictatorial managers who only care about their P&L and view subordinates as an impact to it.

    Victim of retaliation

    ProsThe company has excellent code of conduct. Being a technology company, the processes and way of work is fast and efficient. There is so much learning in this company.

    ConsImportant aspect of the code of conduct is not lived up with as how it was being professed. "Old boys club" ruled the senior management circle. Retaliation is prevalent especially if you did not sing in chorus with favored supplier of the senior manager. Very few or no internal opportunities. Your position today will be yours until maybe next 10 years.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRetire your senior managers and infuse fresh blood until its not too late.

    Prosworking hours are flexibel, we get a company car without fuel car which is good for the envirenement, etc.

    ConsInternal spec are very hard to understand, huge paper work needed for any simple action, priority is given to quarterly revenue rather than to quality, etc... A bit demotivationg sometimes..

    If you want to work with narrow-minded managers in an old boys club culture, this place is for you.

    ProsNothing really positive to mention.

    ConsCulture does not promote new ideas, innovation, or cross functional teamwork. Abusive management behavior went unchecked even when brought to the attention of HR department.
    They still use pagers and employees are responsible for emptying their own trash as "cost savings" methods.

    Advice to Senior ManagementManagement approach needs a complete overhaul from the top down. The dead wood is in middle-management. Clean house here and bring in some new blood to reset priorities and create a positive culture.

    ProsIt is a large corporation with multiple locations worldwide which one would think would create a culture of diversity which it does not.

    Consvery silo'ed and not very good environment. seems like your working for the cia very depressed environment where women are not valued.

    Advice to Senior Managementtone at the top is needed to be assessed, lower level workers are not valued and actually are made to feel expendable

    "Death Spiral"

    ProsA FEW of the people are smart and engaging, and have the necesssary skill set to work at a Multinational Company. Free Parking for employees.

    ConsManagement is totally top down, no employee development: Management's view is stay where you are and be glad you have a job, VERY bureaucratic, lots of backstabbing and taking credit for other's work. Promotions based on old boy network.
    No credible Senior Management in the Tax department. In an effort to save money they do not have a VP of Tax, instead they have an "average" accountant with no tax experience as the "Director of Tax". At most companies he would be nothing more than a, glorified, Sr. Analyst, if that. Oddly, he seems more concerned about whether his employees take out their garbage each day( ON does not employ a janitorial staff, in an effort to save money) than about the quarterly tax rate. The way Senior Management and ON's outside consultants step all over him,he's basically a doormat at the company.
    In addition, the individual responsible for International Tax at ON is a total goofball. I never heard anything, from him that led me to believe he even had the faintest idea of what he was talking about when it came to International Tax, or Tax, in general.
    This is how seriously the tax department at ON is run- at one point, the "Director of Tax", who is Mormon, thought it was appropriate to have an employee pass out the Book of Mormon to everyone in the department for after-work reading. Yes- That actually happened.
    Turnover is outrageous. The only way to truly survive this company and its Byzantine politics is to be a yes-man.

    Advice to Senior ManagementIf you like getting things done, being surrounded by talented counterparts, and fast paced environments, this is definitely NOT the place for you. Mgmt should consider changing that. Don't infantilize your employees with silly cost cutting measures. If you, consistently, need your employees to take forced time off and take out their own garbage, to meet your quarterly guidance, then you may want to re-think your business model.
    Care about turnover -- there's a real problem when most of your staff leaves after a year.
    HR needs to realize that there's no advancement potential at ON, Upper Management positively cackles with delight when they get a chance to screw over an employee.
    If an employee has worked in a department for 10 years and not one person from their department can tell you what their responsibilities are- Let them go.
    Don't consider people to be "highly educated" if they only have an online degreee from University of Phoenix or some similar "fly by night" online university.

    Layoffs and forced time off

    ProsOpportunity to work with some world-class companies as customers, both large and small.

    Some very good people work at ON Semi. I made good friends I will keep in contact with for years to come.

    A U.S.-based semiconductor company, which is rare these days.

    ON Semi devices are literally in everything. Crack open an electronic device and chances are good you will find at least one ON chip on the board, if not more.

    Truly an international company. There are many opportunities to work with people in different countries and from different cultures. You can learn a lot and get good international experience.

    Benefits are pretty standard but solid. The employee stock purchase program gives a generous 15% discount, when many companies give only 5%.

    Every once in a while the company will sponsor a get together, barbecue lunch or even trip to an amusement park. This only happens in fairly good times, though, and they're pretty spread apart.

    If you need to travel for business, accommodations and meal reimbursements are reasonable.

    ConsCompany is very focused on the short-term. In the last four years there have been four rounds of layoffs. Yet I still saw senior managers driving luxury rental cars on the company dime. When someone leaves, their position is often not back-filled, and everyone else has to just do more work to make up for it. Same for laid-off positions.

    Forced time off is an annual tradition. Plan on using a large block of your vacation every year around Christmas and New Year's. Additionally, over the past couple of years it has become common for management to require 10 days of vacation time to be used in a quarter, usually in calendar Q1 or Q4, or both. If you want to take vacation in the summer, there's always the option of going unpaid during forced shut downs. And this isn't just manufacturing - all employees are required to take the time off unless they are somehow protected by local law.

    Business units are extremely siloed and many managers try to build up their own private fiefdoms. There is little coordination or cooperation between separate groups or business units, even when they're in the same physical location or they report to the same senior manager.

    ON Semi's spree of buying companies or parts of companies seems like a good thing, but it just results in more layoffs at both the acquired company and the parent company. Integration generally goes poorly.

    The workplace is mostly made up of lifers who have survived round after round of job cuts and consolidation. It can be difficult to fit in if you weren't with the company 15 or more years ago. There are some very good people, but there are also those who seem to be promoted because being a jerk is a desired managerial trait.

    Technologically, ON Semi is mid-range at best, a laggard at worst. "Cutting-edge" is a phrase you will likely never hear tied to ON Semiconductor.

    Advice to Senior ManagementThese aren't the old Motorola glory days anymore. Running a sweatshop while acting like you're corporate royalty may please investors in the short term, but you're steadily building a company full of jaded, overworked people. Many stay because they don't want to make a life change but others will leave as soon as better opportunities comes along.

    An excellent place to train your off shore replacements

    ProsThe people there really are great to work with. Compensation is decent, benefits are good. IT systems are marginal - designed for minimizing IT cost, not user productity/satisfaction

    ConsUsed to have Great people, but whittled down to just good people. Never ending move of jobs offshore, and appearantly no interest in being part of a US jobs program. Work 10-12 hr days, forget a night life with calls to asia.

    Advice to Senior ManagementConsider a profit sharing program, or a much broader stock participation program instead of keeping 90% at the top levels. Stop treating employees like the don't have other options just because there is no work in Phoenix.

    Does not hire Qualified Veterans.

    Maintenance Technician (Current Employee) Portland, OR (US)

    ProsThey looked good at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. My friend qualified for the open maintenance technician position. HR saw His resume at the job fair and said to him, "We would like to have you". Thou, HR did not reply to his application and resume.

    ConsPolitics, Politics, Politics!!! What a slap in the face to every veteran that applied to ON at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. He was told to go online and apply. While all this time they got publicity from the news Paper and TV. They did not want to hire a qualified veteran. If it were not for veterans, there would be no ON. Mad, you bet I am Mad. They used military veterans just for advertizing their company ON name. I plan on quiting.

    Advice to Senior ManagementHire the very ones whom are willing to die for your freedom. What is wrong with your HR Department? I bet that you could not count the veterans you have hired at ON on one hand. Shame on you!!!
