    Great potential, but limited opportunities and cronyism were rampant while I was there.

    ProsThose who do perform are very good and take up the slack for those who don't perform. The performers are great teammates.

    ConsToo many non performers were protected by their "patrons" which made work difficult for team members who actually DO perform. It can sap morale from the team who have to step in where others fail repeatedly.

    Advice to Senior ManagementHold managers accountable for the non performers in their groups.

    OK, but heading in wrong direction

    ProsNCI makes an effort to recruit top level talent, just make sure that you get what you are looking for compensation wise from the start. Don't fall for the "this is what we can bring you on at and then we'll bump you up down the road." I've seen that happen to a bunch of people at NCI.

    ConsNCI tries to sell themselves as being bigger than they actually are. They'd like to think that they are one of the big dogs in the defense industry, but actually are struggling to stay afloat. About a year ago they brought in a big shot who was suppose to turn the company around. Instead when NCI started losing contracts because of poor proposal writing they took it out on their employees by cutting benefits. They took away everyone's sick leave that had already been accrued and instituted a new PTO program. The new program went into effect 1 Jan 2012. The employees were notified 31 Dec 2011. Some employees lost hundreds of hours of sick leave that they had accrued over years. And employees who had called out all the time and burned through all their sick leave were unaffected. They also cut 2 federal holidays which is retarded because the government is off so most of the installations are closed.

    Advice to Senior ManagementReward hard work and success. Hold your managers to task when evaluating performance. Don't let them hand out blanke reviews and raises. If an entire installation on a contract gets the same percentage increase in a performance period then someone is not doing their job. Also, an employee stock purchase plan would be great. The sick leave to PTO thing was a huge morale killer. You punished people who came to work everyday and rewarded call outs. Even if you had paid out a percentage of the accrued leave or transferred a percentage to PTO it would have at least shown that you appreciated the employees that had good attendance.

    A paycheck. Lots to play with and learn, but little actual work to be done; no focus or direction.

    ProsGood pay, smooth onboarding process. Upper management seemed friendly and sincere.

    ConsTeam lead was not very knowledgeable or friendly. Was little to no focus as to what exactly we were supposed to be doing. Had to create my own work to do since very little was handed down. Lines of responsibility were blurred. Lots of bureaucratic roadblocks and politics. Contract stability was dubious, double standards for some employees who apparently did not have to meet minimum requirements for their position. Most there seemed to do just the minimum to keep their job.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRather than simply hiring to fill a seat, verify the person is competent in their skill set and has some motivation and initiative to work. Have some interaction with your employees and see how they are fitting in to their role.

    Ineffectual Management

    ProsNCI values it's employees and places a lot of emphasis on communication and ethics. The company as a whole is a good place to work and the staff is friendly.

    ConsWorking for a subsidiary, I found the corporate friendliness and views to be driven out by the subsidiary’s views and business practices. There was very little room for growth or promotion. The company keeps saying they are making money but benefits are continuously getting cut and there were no annual raises in 2012 due to financial strain.

    Advice to Senior ManagementGet your ducks in a row with your subsidiaries. Train management how to effectively do their job. Deadlines, schedules, budgets and even doling out punishments and terminations are part of an everyday management role. If a manager cannot fulfill these tasks then they shouldn't be management. Promotion to management should come with some actual management knowledge not just a number of years a person has put in with the company. Not everyone is cut out to be management, and if you make a mistake and make someone a manager and it isn't working out, then remove them from that position to one more suited to them.

    Burn and Churn company

    I was a warm body to fill a position.

    ProsIt's a paycheck, a small small paycheck. I look at it as a paid internship. NCI does offer a lot of skillport classes and online books. They will grudgingly pay for IT certifications. You can learn a lot if you are fresh out of school.

    ConsLow pay. Untrained workers. You get what you pay for. From what I have seen, NCI just wants a warm body. They have poor middle management. Upper management must be good since they keep winning contracts and making money. I know they are making money because they send employees spam emails telling us. Employee moral is low.

    Advice to Senior ManagementYour employees are your business, compensate them better. They are the face that your clients see. Your customers see disgruntled employees, and your high turnover. Luckily the US government goes with the lowest bidder.

    Great talent, management not so much

    ProsThe hours are flexible and the atmosphere is laid-back. You meet some genuine people, and some I still consider friends.

    ConsFavoritism is out of control especially at the corporate level. Monetary compensation is based on who you know, not on the quality of your work. There is no formal mentorship and there is a huge lack of communication amongst employees and their supervisors. There is no "team" environment nor team building. Lack of motivation/incentives from managers. Benefits are over-priced.

    Advice to Senior ManagementCharles should try to listen to the true workers of the company. He relies too much on his managers to keep the company running, but he doesn't realize that some of his "managers" cover-up the ugly truths about their departments. A happy employee = a good worker = a succesful company.
