A good start from Microsoft

Intern (Current Employee)
Beijing, Beijing (China)

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern for more than 5 years

ProsI don't know much about Microsoft, but know Microsoft Research Asia. As a industrial lab, we have freedom and support to do great research, both for improving products directly or long term purpose. The atmosphere is creative.

ConsAs a industrial lab, Microsoft Research Asia has high standard facility but less students compared to university. Researchers have to be accustomed to do experiments most of the time.

Good summer internship

Summer Intern (Former Employee)
Gurgaon, Haryana (India)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

ProsI got exposure to the real world software business as a summer intern. Ideal place to understand the career ladder for a software engineer. Good place to learn and see from the best-in-class people.

ConsDid not get the feel of a company which i thought it would be when it started with creative spirits and the entrepreneurial hunch. Young talents should be provided with better mentorship and guidance.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere can be better ways to break the silos between the different product teams.

Explorer Intern Review

Explorer Intern (Former Employee)
Redmond, WA (US)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

ProsAs an explorer intern I got to experience the three disciplines: dev, test, and pm. I got to interview at the end of my internship for an internship next summer. If you stay on the same team, it is very easy to get offered back a full time offer. There are tons of intern events within the department that I worked and with the interns as a whole. The work environment was great and everyone was very eager to help me. I loved the project that I worked on during the summer.

ConsI am not a hug fan of the Seattle area. Redmond was very boring to me. I also did not have a car so I really couldn't get around much.

Amazing place to work! They care about their employees!

Program Manager Intern (Former Employee)
Redmond, WA (US)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat work-life balance, they care about growing you and helping to further your career. The benefits are amazing, there's great mobility within the company as a whole, and the work is interesting and engaging.

ConsIt's easy to overwork yourself. The "calibration" system is terrible.

Explore Intern (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA (US)

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

ProsThey treat interns very well; it's what you make of the internship and managers are very helpful and willing to share.

ConsYou have to fix your eyes on inspiring people because there are some interns who will pull you to slack off.

Advice to Senior ManagementPerhaps treat interns more similarly to the full time employees so that we get a feel for what full time would be like

Research Intern (Former Employee)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

Pros- Great researchers contribute to making microsoft research an intellectually stimulating environment to work in.

- Microsoft research organizes a ton of free events for interns that are a lot of fun.

- Commute to work can be somewhat long depending one where you stay.

Great place to intern.

Software Development Intern (Current Employee)

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern for less than a year

ProsVery flexible hours as long as your work gets done. Many people here work 40-50 hours per week and you're not looked down upon for doing so. Overall nice work environment. Work with very skilled and experienced people. Interesting work.

For interns, pay is among the best for tech companies and the subsidized housing and rental car make it even better. Intern events are also awesome.

ConsSometimes have to deal with legacy systems. As with any huge company, there's some annoying bureaucracy to deal with. In many groups, there are no coding standards, insufficient code reviews, and extremely poor documentation. Work with lots of custom internal tools which means that experience here is not very transferable to other companies in some cases.

Biggest con though is there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm from people in their day-to-day work; many people seem to be here to just do a decent job and get paid but don't care deeply about actually improving the customer experience or making their projects succeed.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet mid and lower managers to make coding standards, code reviews, and documentation more of a priority. Yes, it's boring stuff but it would really save time and money in the long-run by reducing the number of bugs and duplicated effort. Make company-wide or division-wide standards (like Google's style guidelines) for the commonly-used programming languages.
