McAfee (Intel) is a stepping stone!

Software Developer (Former Employee) Waterloo, ON

ProsPeers in engineering are smart, nice and are willing to help others.
Company will buy you the hardware you need to get you job done, you just need a good business case.
Pay is OK, nothing to get excited about. Negotiate well on hire!
Nice place for a short term.
Free pop, free donuts (once a week), monthly cake day to celebrate birthdays (very recent)
    Good benefits

ConsThis is a "Yes" man's place.
No commitment from management to help grow you, they want you happy where you are.
Work life balance is not something valued here! They value deadline over quality.
Burn-out due to stupid duplication of cross-team roles. Developer expected to also be QA, do your job as a coder then do the job of a full-time QA. If QA gets a buggy drop, they+QA management whine about their "deadline" being stretched. QA doesn't want to work past 5pm! So developer have to put in extra hours, this is unfair!!!
They try to fit an agile process in a company that is more like a waterfall software development shop.
They lack real engineering standards, it's really painful how much dev managers are so old school they see no value is using a unit testing framework!
You can work your butt off, put in long hours and you will not get a pay raise to even match inflation. This is not only sad, but plain insulting! More so when a company sees double-digit growth for 8+ consecutive quarters! It's a slap in the face!!
No opportunity for growth, company is really small. you are pretty much stuck where you are.
Slow to embrace new technology, they love to acquire companies for the IP, but zero focus on R&D.
Management will throw you under the bus, even when they are not managing you!
Management is resistance to change, they talk with zero action and lack credibility. Most manager will listen, that is as far as it goes.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop talking, stop taking surveys and just execute. Noting speaks volume then "effective" action. Workers see though the hot air talks, also the surveys are so misleading because no one really believes they are anonymous. As a result "real" feelings between peers is not reflected in the survey management is seeing!

Was once great is now not

Account Manager (Former Employee) Sydney (Australia)

ProsGreat health benefits and some social activities Non management is great very nice people who stick together.

ConsHealth Benefits and social activities cover the fact that their management structure is terrible. They are a fight or flight company if you are not doing well get out training may help but human understanding is thrown out the window.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to stop micro managing your employees and start seeing them as people not numbers.

take a job here if you are Unemployed!

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsMcAfee is a company that offers free parking and free sodas to employees.

ConsMcAfee is a place to go to die or to go if you're unemployed--that was my excuse. The company is filled with "lifers" who have put in years and years. Quite uncommon in the valley so you should take this as a red flag! People managers have $0 budgets for development. In the entire time I have been here, not once have I attended a meeting (staff, extended staff, all-hands, etc.) that included a speaker from outside of McAfee or Intel. This is called inbreeding. This is what's going to kill McAfee.

Least capable get promoted. Remember that when you see someone's resume who was a director or a VP. The people who are changing things who are creative and paradigm-shattering come in and leave jaded usually under 3 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your people
Allow your people more latitude to complete their jobs
Change meeting structures from status reports and top-down communications to more creative, problem solving and down-to-top communications

Wasted too much of my career here

Inside Sales Account Manager (Current Employee) Plano, TX (US)

ProsMcAfee will hire anyone for inside sales positions even if you have no experience. You can come here, get experience and then leave for one of the competitors nearby and make a lot more money. If you do a really average to poor job at McAfee they'll promote you to management.

ConsTerrible inside sales management team. They are just a joke and most sit around a better part of the day joking around with each other, not working, not helping and being another obstacle to hurdle while you try to make your unrealistic quota. We have people hired to be sales mentors and coaches and all they do is talk about football and rock bands all day.

Advice to Senior ManagementIntel you should take a hard look at what's going on in Plano with your inside sales teams. It's crazy to me that it has been allowed to go on like this for so long, even with so many poor reviews posted. There is a reason McAfee has become a people machine with high turnover.

    Don't believe what you hear!

Inside Sales Representative (Current Employee) Cork (Ireland)

ProsGood Vision and companies future is bright.

ConsPoor Sales Leadership. I've been in the company for a year and the management team of the sales organisation is extremely poor and lack respect. They forget we people are human and not robot number crunching spare parts. I believe some leadership training will help with this.

Advice to Senior ManagementAttend people management and effective leadership courses.

    Negative environment

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

    Prosgood benefits and smart people

ConsAn "eat your young" environment has gradually taken over since the Intel acquisition. It's become completely non supportive and an aggressively negative place to be. Lots of pressure from Intel on new products has created a constant sense of panic that results in poor behavior at the leadership level. Complete mismanagement of headcount quarter to quarter persists and results in a persistent hire-then fire process.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of bullying managers from the top down. They are slowly poisoning the culture. With so much opportunity in high tech A players are unlikely to stick around for the abuse.

Not a friendly environment to work.

    Manager (Current Employee)

ProsVery little, Free software protection for 1 year

ConsThe IT department VERY RACIAL. Don’t like ex-military. Most directors seem to never have managed people before. Micro-managers. You wait for direction then get asked your status. Have no understanding of budgets. Always looking to blame instead of fixing problems. Changes processes, but don’t inform anyone and wonder why you don’t know of the change. Started looking for new position 3 weeks in.

Advice to Senior ManagementClear out your Directors

Archaic organization to be avoided at all costs, unless you're employed :)

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsThere are some nice people there. Free parking.

ConsSanta Clara office is in a poor location. Forget about taking a train to the office or a cush shuttle. We don't have those. What we do have is a vacuum at the top level that has liquidated engineering resources to the point that the company can't release a product that is innovative. Marketing is completely hamstrung with archaic systems. The web site doesn't even have a content management system. The company is full of slackers that have sat in their grey cubs for years doing nothing. Pay is awful. Company is going downhill fast.

    Advice to Senior ManagementReorg
    Pay people better
    Give employees leeway to innovate
