    MassMutual is a fine company.

    ProsTheir best advantage is in providing sales support for new business. They focus on training weekly and they encourage entrepreneurs.

    ConsThis is not salaried and it no real marketing support is offered. It is akin to a franchise in that production quotas must be met. Other than informal suggestions by sales managers, there is little help. Cold walking business is not productive and competition in the NYC area is fierce. Every third person seems to be working in this industry.

    Advice to Senior ManagementInvest money in developing account management rather than focusing on out-dated cold-calling techniques. Provide financial backing for seminars.

    If you do get sick it is very frowned upon to actually use the sick time.
    Systems are very unorganized.
    Management puts more focus on revenue generating incentives than providing accurate/quality customer service
    When mistakes are made in other departments you are the front line for those customers

    Like working unpaid overtime? This may be your kind of place!

    Underwriter (Current Employee)

    ProsFinancially strong company. Great reputation in industry for paying claims. I hear that employees in non-production related roles don't have to work as much overtime.

    ConsWith the economic downturn around 2008, like many companies, MassMutual stopped filling positions that became vacant due to attrition. Managers told the employees in production environments that they would simply have to get the work done with the staff they had left. They then began requiring staff to work X# of hours/ week of unpaid overtime. This has spiraled into an unfortunate work environment where the employees have to put in 5, 10, even 15 hours per week of unpaid overtime, on a regular basis, almost year-round. There is no way that you can work here and have a normal family life or social life. You can work 12 hours/ day all week and then still be told on Friday that you have to put in 5 more hours on Saturday. Huge sales contest every Sept-Dec- OT is even worse, vacation time not really permitted. Everyone in this type of role is trying to leave.
    Health benefits are sub-par.
    Ridiculous open work environments (no cubicle walls) to promote collaboration, even in roles where this is not appropriate.

    Advice to Senior ManagementCut the enormous bonuses senior leaders are being paid a bit so you can afford to hire enough employees to manage the work and have a life. You are relying on your staff to work excessive free overtime as your normal way of managing business. Don't say you value work/life balance when your management philosophy proves your don't. As the economy improves, more and more people will be leaving.

    Stuck in a Time Warp

    ProsThe company is in a strong financial position, with decent pay and bonuses generally pay out at the target. Because they are mutually held they don't have the same pressures as a public company. It's a slow moving industry and company so you won't see a lot of change or really any change.

    ConsIf you don't live in the Springfield area and have not worked in the Life Insurance industry this is not the place for you. The culture is stuck in a time warp. The CEO has only ever worked at MassMutual and has the blinders of 'doing it the same old way' which is held across the company. They recognize the need to become more innovative and flexible and have been recruiting from the outside for some key hires. Candidates realize quickly that this is a painful environment that has no appetite for change -- you are pushed down if you try to move outside the boundaries... to the point you are talked to about 'assimilating'.

    There is a reason last year's salary.com survey showed them as having the highest turnover of any company.... very few who come in new stay for very long.

    Advice to Senior ManagementWhen a General Manager at one of your offices schedules a time to speak over the phone and then reschedules that call, it would be important for these management level employees to follow through with their obligations. Also, if they cannot make the time they previously scheduled ensure they contact the person with a reasoning rather than having someone wait around 5 hours on a phone call that still has yet to happen. Overall, follow through with your obligations will make all stakeholders happy, not uncertainty!

    Great People, terrible company

    Technical Agent (Current Employee) Salt Lake City, UT (US)

    ProsThe agents and their assistants are great to work with. They're generally helpful and kind and carry on fun and interesting conversation while performing work. They understand life/work balance and are pretty flexible.

    ConsDue to the environment, little monetary investment is made in good and proper technology. While its up to the agents to provide technology for their assistants, corporate provides the technology for the agency. If a computer crashes there are no backups on hand (for agency staff nor independent agents). No spare keyboards/mice. No IT tools like USB CD-rom for re-installing OS on machines with faulty drives (or bios limitations).

    As IT, I daily use my own personal equipment to satisfy agency needs, including taking PC's home to download updates.

    The salary is 30% to 50% less than average for the area.

    Advice to Senior ManagementProvide better infrastructure. 1.5Mbs internet does not work for 65 to share.
    Provide backup hardware for PC's. Spare hard drives, keyboards/mice/monitors are essential for any IT work.

    ProsMassMutual has great products to offer people.

    ConsPoorly run agency. They care nothing for new advisers. Just sign up friends and family and then people have to quit because they aren't really getting paid. Financing is a joke should just get a base instead. Turnover is so so so so high its crazy.

    Stuck in time -- any innovation is lost

    ProsThe company is very financially stable and doesn't have the same pressures as a public company, which is great not having to worry about the numbers quarter to quarter. Seems like lots of job security - few layoffs compared to public companies.

    ConsThe culture is stuck in the 'slow, old, corporate' mindset... very stuffy culture and feel. Any spark of innovation is quickly snuffed out. They have attempted to hire outside innovative thinkers only to be told to essentially 'assimilate' (yes that word was said to me directly). I believe the CEO has only ever worked at MM, so not surprising it hasn't changed. It is no wonder MassMutual was ranked as the company with the highest turnover by salary.com last year -- even beating out silicon valley high tech companies.

    It really feels like you're playing on the B or C team. If you are willing to become a lemming then this is the place for you.

    Advice to Senior ManagementIf you're not willing to listen to new ways of thinking, don't hire folks for that bring that to the company.

    Glorified Sales Job

    Pros-No micro managing
    -Not a 8-5 job
    -good training for sales
    -nice office
    -Products being sold have quality
    -company with long history and well known

    Cons-Sales position (i.e. lots of cold calling, soliciting, networking, etc...)
    -Can't trust anyone (everyone out for themselves)
    -No compensation (charged E&O insurance plus office fees)
    -Expected to fail (something like 80% or higher turnover for this job)

    ConsAre opinions truly valued? Arrogant approach to market?

    Advice to Senior ManagementThe management team is aggressive and wants to win (good), but they are not necessarily humble in terms of seeing their own organizational flaws (unacceptable). They can stand to learn more - and truly listen - to all levels of employees. Employees take notice and many talk behind mgt backs (mgt levels as well)..... While opinions are sought, I saw time and again that if they are different than mgt, you're up a creek without a paddle. In my time there, I was treated fairly well...but I realized it was not a productive/healthy working environment with threatening innuendo (usually disguised with smiles and shrugs) if you do not fall in line. Then watch your back. If you don't mind being a 'yes' person, it's the company for you.
