Managers were untrustworthy. Training was horrendous. Work here as an absolute last resort.

Staff Accountant (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI have a lot of respect for some of my former coworkers. There is a lot to keep you busy, but unfortunately you won't be trained very well about processes, so you'll have to figure out your own way.

ConsMy biggest gripe with EDMC is the lack of trust that I had in my managers. They made rules up as they went along and I never really knew what to follow. I do not believe they cared or wanted the best for me or anyone else in the department. The company is struggling, so I wouldn't have held that against the lower level managers and supervisors if they had been honest with my department, but they weren't. It seemed like someone somewhere on the chain of command told them to act a certain way and the managers did. It felt like they were only looking out for themselves.

Many of the employees from my department are extremely discontent with their new workload. The staff has dwindled in size since the hiring freeze began in 2012 and most of the knowledge held by previous employees was not passed on. The current employees in my former department are either younger college grads or older people who don't want to start over. They are not well positioned to make improvements.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop lying to your employees. Do not bad mouth current/former employees behind their backs to their coworkers. That is childish and your employees do not trust you, they will tell the people you are talking about.

After many years, left that disastrous mess

Mid Management (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time for more than 8 years

Prospeople in the trenches mean well, work hard, but can't compensate for poor leadership

Conslack of vision, poor leadership, ridiculous expectations, lack of acknowledging strong contributions from staff in favor of favoritism. allowing strong contributors to leave or be driven out while supporting failing leadership/management decisions.

Advice to Senior Managementquickly undo the poor hiring & promotion decisions you've made lately

Leave your morals and values at the front door ....

Admissions Representative (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time for more than a year

ProsSome people here are very good people who care and truly believe they are helping potential students to get into college. However ... they need to stop drinking the coolaid that EDMC is pouring for them.

ConsUse psychology skills to convince ( or push ) low income families to go to college and put themselves $63,000 in debt. There ya go ... an average day in the life of an EDMC Admissions Rep. They like to pretend that this is "all for a better life of these individuals". God knows these poor people ( and sometimes homeless people ) dont need more debt in their lives. ARGOSY, SOUTH, and Art Institute will charge the MAX amount they can to suck every penny of financial aid they can from each person.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet out, before the numbers go south AGAIN and your canned.

Wow...what a change

Human Resources Manager (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI don't work there anymore! That is definitely a pro! There are also some nice people that are stuck here because the job market hasn't allowed them to go elsewhere yet.

ConsThis place used to be great --- and then the investors drove it into the ground through their greed. Questionable practices, unethical managers, greedy leadership. You name it!

Advice to Senior ManagementSplit the company out -- let the Ai brand go back to a ground-only school and create your own online school. The online degrees are diluting the reputation that of the brick and mortar schools.

Not a great place for Adjunct Professors!

Adjunct Faculty (Former Employee)
Oklahoma City, OK (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation as a contractor for more than a year

ProsI was given a lot of latitude in curriculum design. The pay was pretty good.

ConsThey were poorly managed. They had a lot of management turnover and very poor communication. If you were staff you were included in meetings, but adjuncts were left in the dark on policy, policy changes, processes, performance evaluation and schedule plans.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to keep professional instructors on staff you need a standard review process and a lot of training in intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of senior people.

Run away!!! Most dis-functional IT department ever!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time

ProsSome nice people to work with.
Decent building/facilities.

ConsConstantly changing directions/priorities prevent employees for being effective at their job.Poor communication between departments and between upper management and employees.
Several members of upper management in IT have their head in the sand about issues within the organization..
Low employee morale and poor employee survey results.
Small cubical/desk space with low walls.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to feedback from the employees.
Do a better job determining priority tasks for employees to work on.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that this is about education...

Graduate Admissions (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time for more than a year

ProsThey pay is certainly nothing to complain about but is it worth it when you could very well be without a job at any given moment? Is it worth it to stare at the walls of your cubicle and slowly die inside as you convince people who often times need an education (community college would be better suited for most) to enroll? Of course, when he or she fails a class, it's your fault... ridiculous.

ConsThere are too many to list. I've worked in education for many years, am a PhD candidate, and have taught college-level courses at various institutions. This is a mockery of education, a waste of tax dollars, a means of taking advantage of vulnerable populations, and has no right to call itself "education". It was very rare that I actually felt good for finding the right fit for a student (it's only good if they live in a rural area and need additional courses for certification, etc).

Advice to Senior ManagementThink long and hard about what an education should be and what it is at your institution and don't kid yourself with the fluff. You know the truth.
