Worked one term as an Intern

Test Automation (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON

ProsGreat Place to work at. Very friendly and extremely helpful co-workers. Lots of opportunities to learn new stuff. Would recommend a friend to apply.

ConsNeed appropriate training and guidance for interns and co-ops. Should be immensely independent and be willing and skilful to manage tasks on our own.

An industry leader with global footprint

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON

ProsMedium-sized company, focused on optical and packet networking. It strives to challenge the status quo and redefine the network layers. It is poised for growth.

ConsPerformance awards are not generous perhaps due to the fact that it is not profitable especially after the Nortel acquisition. Little attention is paid on helping employees manage and grow their careers within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the priority of career development for employees even if that change means leaving to a different organization or role.

    OK, not great

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON

Pros- Good people, helpful and smart
    - Interesting work
    - Decent gym (free), good coffee, and very good cafeteria food (note this is in Kanata, not Carling Lab 10)
    - Stock purchase plan

Cons- RRSP matching plan is sub-standard compared to others in Ottawa
    - Management constantly over-commits to customers, then expects the rank and file to work evenings and weekends to meet these deadlines. Employees who don't meet these deadlines are punished via layoffs and/or poor performance reviews.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more people or set more realistic deadlines.

    Ciena Review

Lead Engineer P&T (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON

ProsGreat people, interesting projects, great place to learn new technology. Salaries are competitive. Regular information sessions held to give a report on the state of the company.

ConsAt par with all other industries as far as no taking company loyalty into consideration when implementing a work force reduction.

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't really have any advice for management. Communication to the employees is good. All forms of technology are used.

    Decent, flexible, employee friendly.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt is a good place to work and learn about the telecom industry. It is a working hours flexible company. Environment is amicable and has good benefits.

ConsVery fragmented, silos of power are noticeable and not much team work among different departments. Mid management is old with long tenure. That makes them outdated and very difficult to implement new ideas and methodologies, leading to inefficiencies.

    Good Opportunity for a Time

Accounting and Finance (Current Employee) Baltimore, MD (US)

ProsSalaries are good, bonuses are getting there, time-off

ConsHR is horrible, do not expect support or career advise from this group. Procedures are put into place without training to those will be required to carry out.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not preach party-line to the masses who know better, provide training opportunities for All employees. The company does not run on the backs of engineers and sales alone.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
