Come work for Autonomy - a wacky company, but , but what a highly-regarded and successful company if you can put up with

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Autonomy

Pros- a Cambridge/English company doing things its own way and taking on the world
- the chance to work with the world's leading companies on genuinely world-beating software
- Christmas party weekend in a foreign city (Lisbon, Dubrovnik, Venice, Rome...)
- due to the flat structure, everyone comes in as a manager, managing yourself with only infrequent input from above. Both a pro and con (see below)

Cons- little or no direction from line manager on where this is all going. Entirely unavoidable situation due to the flat structure mentioned above

Advice to Senior Management- as great as it is to be different and not bow down to conventional ways of doing things, still tone things down a little bit - some of the ways in which the company is run are a little too wacky even for my tastes

Employees take a back seat..

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Pleasanton, CA (US)

I have been working at Autonomy

ProsTremendous company growth to the point of a startup feel. Aggressive senior management that knows how to pursue deals and market and create technically capable products. Technically superior products.

ConsThe focus on employees takes a distant back seat to the focus on growing the company. Employees are burnt out, recognition and compensation and emphasis on training is generally poor or a mixed bag. There is no real emphasis on creating a working environment where people would want to be. Empowerment and support by upper management to middle management is generally poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow more appreciation to your employees particularly the ones killing themselves to make you successful at all levels.

Excellent Company but microscopic management.

Senior Presales Consultant (Current Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Autonomy

ProsGood salary, very lean and efficient. Well managed. Very centralized decision making. Makes it fast and responsive to changes especially for acquisitions.

ConsWork your ass off. Call you on weekends or late at night. If you are not at good terms with the key people, your life can be a hell.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen up to globalization guyz. The companies are becoming transnational now-a-days where they can leverage the relative advantages in each country to the success of the company. The management would just not understand the cultural and political differences between countries.

Good Compensation, Excellent Benefits - But be prepared to work long, hard hours. Communication is poor.

Technical Specialist (Current Employee)

I have been working at Autonomy

ProsThe work is interesting, the salary is good, the benefits package excellent.

ConsMany employees are overworked, communication within the company poor, even within individual teams

Advice to Senior ManagementMore communication, more team-building neccessary. Nurture the new hires - especially the ones straight out of college - more and don't drive them nearly as hard.

Hard But Fair

VP Archiving and Compliance (Current Employee)
New York, NY (US)

I have been working at Autonomy

ProsPeople tends to fall into a number of camps... those who've been here years; Those who've joined by acquisition and the remainder new hires. Needless to say those who've been here years fit like a glove... those by acquisition who then leave hate it and those who stay put up with it. New hires either love or hate it mainly dictated by age (not always but in the main).

Consrun on a tight budget and objectives (which is not a con) but the way its achieved is like boot camp in winter! OK if you're obsessive but stay away if not!

Advice to Senior ManagementLoosen up and fly a little higher and share the profits a bit more with whole company instead of "stars"!!! Could do with more communications and less instructions

Great technology. Lots of pressure to succeed. Unforgiving of the slothful, moaning & stupid.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Autonomy

ProsNot very PC I know! But its both true that its great technology and that there is a great deal of pressure to succeed at every level. The rewards for the successful and hard working are significant and the opportunities for where this gig could go are immense, but the problems come when everyone thinks THEY are the hard working ones (and aren't) in which case its pretty unforgiving.

ConsIts not a perfect world but this seems to sort out the men from the boys. Choose wisely and know you're strengths.

Advice to Senior ManagementIts a big mistake not to publicise rewards more internally. Need better internal comms. Having said that, the fundamentals are the right ones so these are relatively minor concerns.

Great company for the right people!

Sales Engineer (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I worked at Autonomy

ProsAutonomy is the leader in the enterprise search market, especially after acquiring its biggest competitor Verity. The culture of the company is very sales-driven. They are more interested in selling software than selling services- which is great! They want to go forward and expand their partner model in Microsoft-fashion. If they can build a service community that depends on the company's continued success it will drive market-share and the company's presence will expand organically. Their technical force is divided from their sales-force, which is not the norm in pre-sales. What it does allow for is greater dynamic asset allocation, which means when a pending deal needs an injection of talent or manpower it is more readily available than in a company that has its tech resources tethered to specific sales-people or regions.

ConsThere are high demands on your time. High-pressure as the quarter comes to a close. Their client support has gotten better and could improve even more. They can do more to improve their brand. Autonomy is not a household name but that is mainly because the average household has nothing to do with "enterprise search"! However if they devote development time to more public-facing projects (a good example is Blinx, which is IDOL-driven) they can become a part of the general public's consciousness- and that can only lead to greater success.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the bonus structure more transparent.
