I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The have a large on site cafeteria, work life balance, management staff is forward thinking. Technology is good.

    Cons

Their IT departments have too much overhead and repeated jobs. No standardization. Frequent reorgs make it difficult to find a working rhythm. They have too many brands to manage. They don't appreciate their people. The higher management is completely removed from what is happening in the working world of their company. Communication is horrible top to down. They waste their money on useless things. Over all the company is poorly managed, fractured into silo's that all do their own thing and consistently is trying to catch up to its competitors to stay "in the market"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together. Communicate to all your areas what your goals are and make sure the rest of the company aligns with that directive. Encourage your management staff to work with you on the forward progression of the company and listen to their ideas. Eliminate the duplicate positions within the company and unite your people to work together. Having an AGI group that is managed entirely different than the rest of the company highlight's the fractured nature of your management.

I worked at American Greetings full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Easy place to boost your salary. Amazing creative talent. Flexible work schedule with unlimited sick time.

    Cons

The tech side of the company (AGI - American Greetings Interactive) carries a lot of dead weight and is too stuck in their ways. It would take numerous miracles for the condition of the company's digital products to improve. Rushed or half-baked ideas quickly turn into projects that are pushed live without adequate preparation, strategic development and testing, which makes matters worse. No project is ever considered a failure (even if it fails) and no one is held accountable. This could be considered a 'pro,' but management doesn't have a sincere interest in discussing mistakes. In short, this company lacks thought leadership and is a mess.

The culture is stale, with a high turnover rate and low moral for those who care about their careers beyond AG. The majority of those still employed have been with the company for a long time and seem lulled into corporate complacency. You don't have to keep up your skill set or put in a full day of work to collect a pay check. Exorbitant amount of unproductive meetings. Unnecessary bottlenecks resulting from an inability to make decisions. Numerous teams/departments that don't communicate. Awful tech support... They will hire you, then ensure you're unable to do your job. I left because I was bored and embarrassed of the final products this company provided to their customers.

For those interested in a tech opportunity at AG, read the company's mission statement carefully. It's honestly more like high school than a professional work environment. But hey, you get to wear t-shirts and drink company supplied soda!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting people who have been with the company forever. Instead, hire people with qualifications and offer support when those employees experience push-back from the dead weight.

Maybe AGI should focus on helping Customer Service find and retain talent to support disgruntled customers. Those hard working folks in Customer Service seem to be the brightest crayons in the box.

    I worked at American Greetings

    Pros

Work on your own, on your own hours.

    Cons

If you are so "blessed" to have a supervisor like mine, who stuffed work in a drawer out of sight, instead of processing a credit to the store, not putting cards back in stock and not having the reorder tickets up with the cards, instead of in a plastic bag. So much work needs to be done to get the card dept in order, a rep is doomed from the beginning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check up on if the supervisors are earning their paychecks. The account that I was assigned to is so far behind in work that has not been done. There has not been a rep servicing this location for a very long time. The supervisor has put out the seasonal cards, but damaged cards, which should be credited to the store and cards that need to be put back into stock were just shoved into a drawer, for some other time, which never will come. If the store only knew how bad a service American Greetings is giving them! Why the supervisor thought this was fair to the next merchandiser and the store is beyond me!!

I worked at American Greetings full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a paycheck, and you get discounts at the in-building card shop.

    Cons

So many things wrong with American Greetings, not sure where to start. Management in general is over bearing, micromanaging, and more often then not, gets in the way of you getting your job done. Meetings are excessive, endless, and accomplish next to nothing other than setting the stage for the next meeting. Then there is the antiquated American Greetings IT department. The Help Desk people are clueless, totally unhelpful, and talking to them is one of the most painful experiences one can have. The IT support people generally don't seem to be able to help much at all. You get transferred to a lot of different people that claim it's not their job to help you, and that's if they even respond to you at all. You are told to follow the process, yet the process doesn't work. You have to fill out forms, and submit emails to get what you need to do your job, yet they result in nothing but wasting your time. If you do get any help, it takes months to get that help. It almost seems as if the whole system is setup to discourage you from asking for\getting help. Exterior websites do not display properly because of the antiquated web browser that you are forced to use. Honestly, I'm not sure what the IT department at American Greetings is for as you generally can't get anything you need from them or any help from them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's hard to say what could be said to senior management as they hide out in the "Pizza Hut". You almost never see any of them in person. Honestly, I don't think they care as long as their annual bonuses keep coming.

I have been working at American Greetings part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I found a few new friends on this job.

    Cons

Pay sucks, hours suck.... as a merchandiser iv had weeks as low as 3 hours a week, on the flip side as also being a revision crew member i have been over worked start work at 6am get off work 19hrs later to then have to be back at work the next day all for the same crappie wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

hire supervisors that are competent, ones that care as much about the employees as they do them selves, someone who will take care of work hazards right away instead of 3 months later when they have been told by upper management to do something about it. all in all promotions should be given to someone deserving not just someone who is eager for more pay.
